How to Find Deer Shed Antlers

Written by Trey Copeland at Made To Hunt.

Finding deer shed antlers can be a fun and rewarding hobby, and it is a great way to get outside and enjoy nature.

Here are some tips for finding deer shed antlers:

  1. Look for areas where deer are known to spend their time. Deer tend to shed their antlers in the same general area where they live, so it can be helpful to do some research on the local deer population to find out where they are likely to be found.

  2. Look for areas with good visibility. Antlers are relatively easy to spot if you can see them, so it is helpful to look for areas where there are few obstacles that could obstruct your view. Open meadows, clearings, and fields are good places to start.

  3. Look for signs of deer activity. Deer leave behind a variety of clues that can help you identify where they are likely to have shed their antlers. Look for tracks, droppings, and other signs of deer activity, such as rubs on trees where deer have scraped their antlers.

  4. Join a group of shed hunters. There are many groups and organizations dedicated to shed hunting, and joining one of these groups can be a great way to learn more about the hobby and connect with other shed hunters. These groups often organize outings and events where members can go out and search for shed antlers together. Shed hunting dogs are specially trained to find antlers through sight and scent.

  5. Be patient. Finding deer shed antlers can be a challenge, and it may take some time and effort before you are able to locate any. Don't get discouraged if you don't find any antlers on your first few outings - keep looking, and you will eventually be rewarded for your efforts. Deer are known to shed their antlers in December-March so be on the lookout during those months.

  6. Be respectful of nature and property. When you are out shed hunting, it is important to be respectful of the environment and the property of others. Always obtain permission before entering private property, and be careful not to disturb any plants or animals that you come across.

By following these tips, you can increase your chances of finding deer shed antlers and enjoy the thrill of the hunt. Happy shed hunting!
